Council Votes to Pursue Cross Town Connector Bike Lane
(November 2, 2010) - A cross-town connector bike lane for the Halifax Peninsula was a pedal-turn closer to becoming a reality Tuesday when Regional Council authorized staff to analyse the proposal and gather public feedback.
An evaluation will now be conducted on a number of alternate roads for potential bicycle connections from the North End of the peninsula to the South End.
Mayor Peter Kelly said he welcomed the initiative.
“Dedicated bike lanes are a priority under our Active Transportation Plan,” he noted. “A cross-town connector of this kind would be a great addition to the growing network we are building for cyclists throughout HRM.”
Streets that staff will be reviewing include Windsor, Almon, Agricola, Ahern, Trollope, South Park, and possibly others. The review will consist of bicycle and traffic counts, space consideration for placement of lanes, parking options to mitigate potential on-street parking loss and cost estimates to implement the lanes.
Once the technical review of several proposed routes is complete, staff will hold public consultation sessions with community stakeholders to present and discuss the options. A final proposed Cross Town Connector route based on the technical review and the public consultations will then be submitted to Regional Council for approval.
