New HRM Deputy Mayor Elected
(November 2, 2010) - District 9 Councillor Jim Smith today (Nov. 2) became the new regional Deputy Mayor for HRM.
The new deputy mayor takes over from Councillor Brad Johns who held the position for a one-year term.
“I consider it a privilege to serve as councillor for the citizens of Albro Lake-Harbourview, but to now also have the opportunity to serve as HRM Mayor is truly an honour,” Deputy Mayor Smith said.
Having served on Council for the last ten years, the new Deputy Mayor brings a great deal of experience to the job. He has held positions on a variety of committees dealing with issues including transportation, energy, harbour solutions, regional planning, natural gas distribution, and solid waste, public safety, among others.
Prior to entering politics, Deputy Mayor Smith worked in management with National Sea Products and was involved with building management and operations of a number of Halifax Downtown Properties. He volunteered for many years in a variety of capacities with numerous community and professional organizations such as the Metro Food Bank Society, and was Chair of the Dartmouth North Community Centre Board and Chair of the District 9 Citizens Association.
HRM’s Deputy Mayor serves for a one-year term and is elected by his or her peers.
