Oval Closing Thursday and Friday for Pre-Games Ice Maintenance
(January 26, 2011) The Canada Games Oval will be closed to the public for two days following the public skate scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight. The closure, scheduled for Thursday and Friday (January 27-28) is required to perform ice maintenance in advance of the Halifax 2011 Canada Games. The Oval will reopen on Saturday, weather permitting. HRM and the host society regret any disruptions this will cause.
Technical crews will begin this evening and work around the clock for the two days to complete necessary ice maintenance including final ice markings (start/finish/lane markers) for sport technical purposes. Night time work will require that the Oval lights remain on. The work must be completed in advance of final Oval and site preparations set to take place from February 7 - 11.
The timing of the maintenance is scheduled based on availability of technical representatives and specialized painting equipment. It is the intention of HRM and the host society to accommodate any disrupted skating groups after the Games are completed weather permitting.
Visit skatehrm.ca to confirm events, for condition updates, and to view a calendar of Oval programs, or call the Oval Information Line at 490-2347 for schedule changes due to weather or other conditions.
The Canada Games Oval is the largest artificial ice surface east of Quebec City and will be featured as HRM’s marquee outdoor venue for the Halifax 2011 Canada Games from February 11th to 27th.
