Stadium Analysis Steering Committee Chosen from Highly Qualified Submissions

(Tuesday, March 1, 2011) - Mayor Peter Kelly and Halifax Regional Council completed the selection process today for the HRM Stadium Business Planning and Analysis Steering Committee.

Mayor Kelly said the submission of 80 names for consideration is a testament to the high level of interest in the possibility of a stadium.

“Council and I would like to express our sincere gratitude to those who made such thoughtful submissions in the interest of serving on the committee,” the Mayor said. “We were impressed that so many highly qualified people were willing to dedicate their time and energy to the consideration of a stadium for the region.”

Regional Council has approved six citizen positions - an increase from the previously approved five positions - in an effort to recognise the impressive skills, experience, and interest of the applications received. The citizens selected include:
Kimberley Mason, President of RBC Atlantic
Joseph Burke, law firm partner
Peter Giles, Olympian and astronaut
David McGregor, Senior Director, Technical Services, NSP
Peter Spurway, VP Communications, Halifax International Airport Authority

Mayor Kelly noted that Council and HRM staff members support the development of subcommittees to draw on the wealth of expertise from as many committee applicants as possible.

In all, the Steering Committee will have 15 members. Council representatives will include Mayor Kelly, Councillor Dawn Sloane (Halifax Downtown) and Councillor Darren Fisher (East Dartmouth – The Lakes). The committee will also include one representative from each of Sport Nova Scotia, Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, Recreation Nova Scotia, the Department of Health and Wellness, the Department of Urban and Rural Economic Development and Tourism, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The primary role for the committee will be to:Provide advice and direction to a staff technical team;
