National Artist Program Held in Conjunction with Canada Games Inspires Youth, Free Youth Workshops to be Held Saturday

(February 15, 2011) Not only are Canada’s young athletes being inspired by the spirit of the Halifax 2011 Canada Games, through the National Artist Program (NAP) HRM has become a stage for the nation’s brightest artists as well.

Last year, young artists age 16 to 22 from across Canada were invited to participate in the National Artist Program of the Halifax 2011 Canada Games. Three individuals from each province and territory and with varying arts backgrounds were chosen and are in HRM during the Games to practice their chosen craft under the mentorship of leading Canadian artists.

To assist with the creative development of their artistic practice, these NAP artists will be giving free workshops and collaborating with HRM youth on arts programming at Citadel High School this Saturday, February 19, 2011, from 1 pm to 5:30 pm. Activities range from Hip Hop dance, dance choreography, visual arts, theatre, writing, clowning and circus, and song writing. Workshops will focus on the varied artistic mediums, while reflecting on transcendence - the theme chosen for the national youth program.

Individuals from ages 12 to 25 are welcome to attend but must register by 4:30 pm Wednesday, February 16 by calling 490-4408.

The Canada Games NAP artists will also be showcasing their talents through various interactive art activities at the Halifax Seaport Market on Sunday, February 20 from 10 am to 12:30 pm.
