Mural by local artists to capture 2011 Games legacy

(Friday, February 25, 2011) HRM has invited four aerosol artists to collaborate on a large mural that will capture the spirit of the 2011 Canada Winter Games. The artwork will be installed on the Pavilion Building on the Halifax Common in the spring.

We're fortunate to have very talented aerosol artists in HRM that are enthusiastic about working their creative magic to produce a piece that will grasp the essence of the Games, says Kate MacLennan, HRM Community Arts Facilitator. Legal projects such as this legacy piece will help us to remember the spirit of the 2011 Canada Games.

Allowing our local artists to express themselves in a mural which illustrates how the Canada Winter Games has touched our community is a positive step in our relationship with the urban artists community, commented Councillor Dawn Sloane of District 12 Downtown Halifax. Last year we hosted Hopscotch, the first Urban Festival for our municipality and this mural shows our commitment to working with this art form.

To get their creative juices flowing, artists Luke Norrad, Eli Masek-Kelly, Shawn Bullen and Andrew Ross have experienced a first-hand look at the National Artist Program - a program which bridges excellence between the sport and cultural worlds and participated in the festivities last Sunday at the Halifax Seaport Market where the National Artists performed participatory art activities for the market-goers. The inspiration drawn from attending these events will result in a 12 foot by 40 foot urban-style mural.

The National Artist Program has welcomed the artists with enthusiasm, continues MacLennan. There is a shared sense of excitement about how the style and medium will help capture the spirit of the coming together of these young Canadians.

The artists will be available for media interviews on Sunday at the Pavilion Building on the Halifax Common. To arrange an interview, please contact artist Luke Norrad at 440-1734.
