HRM Senate Committee Presentation on Energy

Friday, February 25, 2011 - The Federal Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources has invited HRM to present at its public hearing in Halifax on Monday, February 28. The Committee is studying the current and future state of Canada's energy systems with the objective of making recommendations to the federal government on ways to strengthen energy systems in the future and encourage pan-regional collaboration.

Mayor Peter Kelly expressed satisfaction in HRM’s successful efforts to harness sustainable energy supplies, especially geothermal and solar resources. “Our initiatives are contributing to a cleaner, greener Atlantic Canada,” he noted. “The collaborative efforts of our region will be far reaching in terms of having a positive environmental impact for our entire nation.”

HRM's presentation is based on existing Council policy and will include information on its initiatives to date, particularly the Solar City project, as well as highlighting the strong role municipalities have to play in achieving energy sustainability. Opportunities to present to committees such as these support HRM's Government Relations policy in raising awareness of HRM projects and priorities and building collaboration.

The Senate Committee meeting is being held at the Prince George Hotel and runs the full day. It is open to the public and HRM's presentation is scheduled for 1:30 PM. The presentation will be posted online after the meeting.

The Committee has created a website devoted to its energy study at www.canadianenergyfuture.ca with more detailed information.
