Public Hearing Cancelled on Proposed Solid Waste Collection Changes

(Tuesday, March 8, 2011) – A public hearing scheduled for this evening to receive input on proposed waste collection changes has been cancelled.

Council voted this afternoon to discontinue any further consideration of Bylaw S-607 and to abandon the process of adopting the bylaw, which includes the requirement to hold a public hearing.

At Council’s direction, HRM staff will undertake additional educational efforts and embark on a public engagement process to shape “the ongoing evolution of the HRM’s Solid Waste Strategy.”

Under the proposed bylaw changes, the allowable number of waste collection bags would have been reduced from six to four and there would have been a new requirement that all but one of the bags placed out for collection be clear.
