Atlantic Mayors’ Congress to be held April 6, 7, 8

Mayors to discuss economic and sustainability topics

(HALIFAX, NS - Tuesday, April 5, 2011) - Mayors from across Atlantic Canada will convene at Halifax City Hall on April 6 - 8, 2011 for a meeting of the Atlantic Mayors’ Congress, an opportunity to discuss significant issues of shared interest.

The Congress, formed in 2001, meets twice a year to share information and to seek economic benefits through shared resources.

“A united approach is essential for each of our municipalities to thrive. Approaching challenges together paves the way to celebrating successes together. I look forward to what the next few days will bring,” explained Mayor Peter Kelly, Chairman of the Atlantic Mayors’ Congress.
“Through this forum, mayors develop a unified voice from an Atlantic Canada perspective in bringing forward issues to the Federal and Provincial Governments.”

The three day agenda begins with an Economic Development Symposium led by the Greater Halifax Partnership that focuses heavily on oceans initiatives, the Atlantic Gateway, the Lower Churchill Falls development and the Atlantic economic outlook.
Other areas that will be covered Thursday and Friday include municipal demographic trends and climate adaption planning, regional tourism and development, and municipal fiscal environments. Representatives from the HRM will give an update on funding of Public Sector Pension Plans and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) will provide their perspective on priority issues facing municipalities.
Wednesday’s session will be open to media until 2:15 p.m. (see attached agenda). Session on Thursday and Friday will be closed to media but Mayors will be available to the media following the days’ sessions at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and noon on Friday.
