Join in for Earth Day 2011 Activities in HRM
(Monday, April 18, 2011) - HRM is organizing a number of Earth Day activities this year encouraging citizens to join one billion people worldwide, in over 170 countries, who will celebrate positive action for the environment.
Dartmouth Harbour Front Trail Walk
Wednesday, April 20, at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Start and finish by the Trans Canada Trail Pavilion in the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal parking lot.
Who: People and pets- rain or shine.
The public is welcome to participate in a casual walk, organized by Halifax Regional Municipality and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The walk (3 km in length) will be starting and finishing at the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal parking lot by the Trans Canada Trail Pavilion (Note: If you work on the opposite end of the trail, you can also start there) The winner of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission and Sustainable Environment Management Office (SEMO) Bike Rack Design Competition (http://www.halifax.ca/environment/design.html) will be announced during this event! The chosen design will be built on the north-east side of the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal.
Metro Transit Patron Appreciation - THANKS for being Green!

Where: Portland Hills Transit Terminal, Sackville MetroLink Terminal, Mumford Terminal, Halifax Ferry Terminal, and Tantallon MetroX,
Who:Transit Users
In recognition of Earth Day, Mayor Peter Kelly, Councillors and HRM staff will be handing out packages of sunflower seeds at a few key commuter transit terminals. This small gesture is a way of thanking citizens for making the choice to use transit and to encourage them to continue using transit. Increased transit use reduces the need to build additional roadway and parking infrastructure.
Noon-hour Bike Ride
Thursday, April 21, 11:30 a.m.
Where: Start and finish at Grand Parade in downtown Halifax
Who: Everyone welcome. Just bring a bike, a helmet and a desire to ride.
Join the Sustainable Environment Management Office, the Halifax Regional Police, the Halifax Cycling Coalition and Clean Nova Scotia in a leisurely, sustainable ride around our beautiful city.
St. Margaret's Bay Trail Walk
Thursday, April 21, at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Start and finish in the Tantallon Elementary School parking lot
Who:Everyone welcome
Please join Councillor Peter Lund, staff from HRM's Sustainable Environment Management Office (SEMO) and the St. Margarets Bay Rails to Trails Association on a walk with a Tantallon Elementary School Grade 2 class. The walk will start in the school parking lot and travel toward Fox Hollow for approximately 15 minutes. The group will then turn around and return to the school.
