HRM Bike Rack Design Competition Winner to be Announced

(Tuesday, April 19, 2011) - HRM’s Sustainable Environment Management Office and the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission will announce the winners of the 2011 Bike Rack Design Competition at 11:30 am on Wednesday, April 20th. The announcement will take place at the Trans Canada Trail Pavillion in the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal parking lot just before an Earth Day walk along the Dartmouth Harbourfront Trail.

All submissions were creative and unique, including a group of submissions from a grade seven class at the Halifax Independent School. The class worked closely with a local blacksmith to ensure that submissions were realistic and included appropriate costs and schematic drawings. The selection panel based its final decision on four criteria: creativity, artistic value, functionality, and use of sustainable material.

The winner will see their design installed adjacent to the Dartmouth ferry terminal. The Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission is the presenting sponsor for this year’s competition. Its involvement showcases the link between developing a vibrant downtown with unique public spaces and promoting healthy lifestyles.
