Trees to be Removed from Central Library Site
(May 6, 2011) - As part of the plan for the new Central Library, some trees and shrubs will be removed from the site at the corner of Spring Garden Road and Queen Street this weekend. The tree removal is required in order for archaeological work to begin. Many of the trees and shrubs being removed are at the end of their life cycle.
A series of Linden trees and an Elm tree will be kept. HRM urban foresters plan to monitor these trees during construction to fortify and protect them as much as possible.
A plan for the Library’s exterior spaces will be developed by a project team made up of staff from HRM’s park spaces group and landscape designers. The new landscaping plan will include healthy new vegetation and green spaces.
Construction of the Central Library is expected to begin this summer and be completed in 2013, with the Library opening in 2014. More information about the Central Library is available at halifaxcentrallibrary.ca.
