Halifax Harbour Solutions Project Successfully Completed
(Tuesday, June 21, 2011)—The largest municipal infrastructure project ever undertaken in Atlantic Canada – and one of the largest in the country - is completed and fully commissioned.
Halifax Regional Council today heard a presentation by Halifax Water, outlining the history and successful completion of the $333-million Halifax Harbour Solutions, described by Mayor Peter Kelly as easily HRM’s largest and most complex project ever.
“After years of patience, residents have the harbour water quality they’ve been waiting for,” said Mayor Kelly. “It has been a challenging and rewarding project that will leave an environmental and economic legacy for generations to come.”
Carl Yates, General Manager, Halifax Water, provided the update on the project that has restored the water quality in Halifax Harbour to the condition residents have long asked for, as put forward by the Harbour Solutions Advisory Committee in 1997. Halifax Water is now the owner and operator of the Halifax Harbour Solutions Project.
D & D Water Solutions Inc. comprised of Dexter Construction, of Bedford, and Degremont Inc., of France, was contracted by HRM to design and build the sewage treatment system for the municipality. The contract for the sewage collection system was carried out by Dexter Harbour Solutions.
Colleen Purcell, Board Chair of Halifax Water, said, “This project has been a monumental task for staff and residents. While not without its challenges, we are pleased to see the project come in under budget and achieve such great water quality results.”
The project officially got underway in November 2003 when construction commenced on the sewage collection system component of the project.
Kurt Jacobs, President of D & D Water Solutions, said “Dexter Harbour Solutions was pleased to undertake the sewage collection system component of the project, and Degremont’s sewage treatment design and process provides the residents of the Halifax Region with the harbour water quality they asked for and deserve.”
Mr. Jacobs added, “Halifax Regional Council is to be commended for their determination and commitment to such a huge project, which represents the largest clean-up of any saltwater body in Canada.”
