Wanderers Grounds Field House Demolition

(June 30, 2011) - The demolition work to remove the former Navy League “Dry Canteen” building (5755 Sackville St.) from the Wanderer’s Grounds will begin on Monday July 4, 2011.

The demolition is expected to take three to four days depending on weather. Some material has been removed from the building to be salvaged, including a mantle and hearth original to the building. The building itself will be completely dismantled and removed from the site. The location will be backfilled and then hydroseeded.

During this demolition work, the sidewalk along Sackville Street, adjacent to the Field House, will be closed to pedestrian traffic. Parking along Sackville Street will be unaffected.

In July 2010, Regional Council approved initiating the process to have the structure de-registered as a heritage property. Council also approved demolition of the building. A previous plan to renovate the building became unfeasible due to the condition of the structure and the environmental remediation work required.
