Trail Walk Will Highlight History and Ecology of Dartmouth Lakes

(August 15, 2011) - As part of a summer public education program to promote watershed stewardship around Lake Banook and Lake Micmac, the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and the Dartmouth Area Watersheds Network (DAWN) will be hosting a guided trail walk on Thursday, August 18th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The approximately 1.5 hour walk will begin and end at the Fairbanks Centre, 54 Locks Road, Dartmouth. The guided walk will follow the trail along the lakes to the turn around point (Brookdale Crescent Park). A short reception with light refreshments will be held in the Fairbanks Centre at the completion of the walk. Dr. Bill Freedman, of Dalhousie University will attend to talk about the ecological stresses faced by urban lakes and Bernard Hart, of the Shubenacadie Canal Commission will discuss the historical significance.

The walk is designed to give area residents a new appreciation of the importance of protecting HRM’s lakes. It is part of a two-month public education program sponsored by the Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps to help reduce non-point source pollution to Lake Banook and Lake Micmac. Other aspects of this program have included youth information sessions and distribution of a brochure to area residents.
