HRM Introduces an Arabic Newcomer’s Guide
(Wednesday, November 16, 2011) - Today Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) introduced the first ever Arabic-language Newcomer’s Guide.
The Newcomer’s Guide for Arabic newcomers provides an overview of key information for newcomers on settling, working, transportation, recreation opportunities, participation in local government, volunteer organizations, and community and cultural events.
Mayor Peter Kelly welcomed the new edition. “The Arab culture has always been a valued presence in our community,” the mayor said. “As we continue to attract more newcomers, this Guide will help them feel at home and encourage them to build on the many contributions residents of Arab descent have made to the life of HRM.”
The Arabic Newcomer’s Guide is an outcome of HRM’s Immigration Action Plan and was developed in partnership with the Arabic-speaking community which assisted with translation and developed the content based on the English guide. The guide tries to fill a specific gap in information on Arabic services and community organizations, while providing a link to other resources.
According to the 2006 Census, HRM had 7,405 persons of Arab origin, and 2,145 reported speaking Arabic most frequently at home.
The Guide will be available on-line at Halifax.ca/newcomers, through settlement organizations, HRM Libraries, Customer Service Centres, and recreation centres.
