Mayor Kelly extends sympathy to inundated Philippines

(December 20, 2011) Halifax - Mayor Peter Kelly has written to the president of the Philippines, expressing concern and condolences for that country as it struggles with flash floods which have killed at least 1,000 people.

“There are more than 700 Nova Scotians of Filipino origin, the majority of whom make their home in the Halifax Regional Municipality,” Mayor Kelly noted. “As a community, we obviously share their concern for loved ones in their homeland.”

The Mayor said he had written to President Benigno Aquino on behalf of Council and the residents of HRM, offering condolences and moral support for the Filipino people during this disaster. He praised the endurance of the Asian nation.

“Filipinos have been tested before by the elements and have proved to the world that they are a resilient people with great faith in God,” Mayor Kelly said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time, and also with the Filipino members of our own community.”
