PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

HRM Winter Works Operations Underway

Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011 – With up to 35 cm of snow in the forecast for some parts of the region today and tonight, HRM’s Municipal Operations Winter Works crews are preparing so that they can have the workers and equipment in place to stay on top on the work ahead.

Crews have equipment on the streets now pre-salting and preparing to switch to plowing/salting as conditions warrant and contractor trucks will be brought in when needed. The focus throughout the day will be on the Priority 1 streets.

The bulk of the snow is expected through late afternoon and early evening and snow-clearing equipment will be doing “cut-throughs” after 10 cm has accumulated and full clearing operations will commence once the snow ends.

Sidewalks in the capital district are being salted now and full clearing operations are scheduled for later this evening.

Although the overnight winter parking ban is not yet in effect, residents are advised that under Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act parked vehicles interfering with snow clearing operations are subject to being ticketed and towed. HRM will be enforcing this regulation.

In emergency situations, please call 911 and the dispatchers there will contact Municipal Operations if they require immediate plowing.

The next event update is scheduled for 4 p.m. today.
