Upcoming events at Point Pleasant Park – Shilling Ceremony and “In Memoria”
Thursday, June 20, 2013 (Halifax, NS) - Residents of HRM lease Point Pleasant Park for only a shilling, a former British coin worth about eight cents by today’s standards. Since 1866, that has been the annual rent due to the British Crown for the ongoing use of the park.
This year HRM is celebrating this historic rent payment with a Shilling Ceremony at the Prince of Wales Tower National Historic Site of Canada (Martello Tower), Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m. HRM residents are invited to come out as Mayor Mike Savage presents Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia J.J. Grant with an 1866 ceremonial shilling for the municipality's annual lease of the park from the Crown.
Point Pleasant Park also has an Artist in Residence, D'Arcy Wilson. As part of her project, "Recalling Your Presence While Calling Your Name," she will be presenting "In Memoria", a memorial service for those animals that once lived beside us and were subsequently driven away. This service will pay tribute to Point Pleasant Park’s lost wildlife with musical accompaniment from the Sacred Heart Audeamus Choir.
Residents are encouraged to take in both events, and enjoy all Point Pleasant Park has to offer on a summer’s afternoon.
