HRM and Dexel Developments Ltd. Install New Public Artwork in Downtown Dartmouth

Friday, August 2, 2013 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality and Dexel Developments Ltd welcome the installation of a signature piece of public art on the site of the Lofts at Greenvale, 19 Irishtown Rd, Dartmouth, the site of the former Greenvale School.

In recognition of the important community impact that Greenvale School played in the lives of generations of Dartmouth residents, the Halifax Regional Municipality and Councillor Gloria McCluskey, in partnership with Dexel Developments Ltd., are pleased to announce the installation of School Chair, an iconic artwork conceived by local artist Ilan Sandler and fabricated with his team at Sandler Studio in Dartmouth. Mr. Sandler was recently commissioned by the Canada Games Host Society to produce another significant sculpture, Lace Up, currently on display at the Emera Oval on the Halifax Common.

As its name suggests, School Chair references iconic school chair and desk designs from different eras, intended to create a sense of continuity between past and present associations to schools as institutions of learning and fixtures of our collective educational experience. The sculpture serves as a playful marker of scholastic activity and reflects upon the legacy of the Greenvale School to downtown Dartmouth and its residents, past and present.

An interpretive plaque providing background to the artwork and the former school that it commemorates will be installed next week, and an official launch of the artwork will take place once all components are in place later this summer.
