HRM beaches open July 1 for the summer season

Tuesday, June 26, 2012 (Halifax, NS) - HRM beaches officially open for the summer on Monday, July 1. So why not enjoy Canada Day at the beach? Daily supervision at most beach sites and the Halifax Common outdoor pool is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HRM offers a variety of beaches, lakes and outdoor pools, many of which are supervised by our trained lifeguards every day of the summer. Lifeguards have specialized training in injury prevention, first aid and are equipped with emergency supplies for a waterfront setting.

Here are some important reminders for those using the beaches:

•learn to swim (you can register today for swim lessons at one of the HRM beaches or your local pool)
•always swim with a buddy in supervised areas only
•guardians are responsible for their children at all times
•avoid relying on flotation devices (i.e. rafts, water noodles, water wings)
•watch out for the “dangerous too’s”: too tired, too cold, too much sun, too far from safety and too much strenuous activity
•avoid diving in unfamiliar or shallow waters as spinal cord injuries may occur

Please note there is no weekend supervision at some locations. For further information on registering for swim lessons and beach supervision including hours of Lifeguard Service visit: www.halifax.ca/rec/Beaches.html or contact the HRM beach office at 490-5458.
