HRM lifts enforcement of overnight winter parking ban

Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – HRM’s Traffic Authority has lifted enforcement of the overnight winter parking ban until further notice.

HRM reminds residents that the overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31, 2014. It will only be enforced during declared snow and ice events, when it will run from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

HRM residents are asked to stay informed and plan ahead by securing off-street parking now for when the overnight winter parking ban is enforced.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications. Fill out a registration form at, email or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Weather and snow clearing operations will dictate how long the overnight parking ban will be enforced. HRM will notify residents when it has been lifted through Public Service Announcements,, 311 and Twitter at @hfxgov.

HRM reminds residents that provincial legislation (Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act) provides that people remove their vehicles from the streets, day or night, in the event of a snow or ice event. Vehicles obstructing snow removal or winter maintenance operations can be removed at the owner’s cost, regardless of time or date.
