HRM winter parking ban takes effect Dec. 15

Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 – HRM is reminding residents and business owners that the overnight winter parking ban takes effect this Sunday, Dec. 15, and will run through to March 31, 2014.

HRM’s Traffic Authority will enforce the ban between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., during declared snow and ice events only. Right now weather forecasts are calling for below-freezing temperatures and heavy snow on Sunday, so residents are encouraged to plan ahead and secure off-street parking in case the overnight parking ban is enforced.

The easiest way to stay informed is to sign up for CityWatch notifications. Simply fill out an online registration form at, email or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message about the status of overnight winter parking bans in HRM. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Weather conditions and snow clearing operations will determine how long an overnight parking ban will be enforced, as it may extend for more than one night. In addition to CityWatch notifications, HRM will issue public service announcements to alert residents and business owners when the ban will be in effect and when it has been lifted. Timely updates will be posted online at and via HRM’s Twitter account, @hfxgov. Residents can also call 311 at any time for up-to-date information.

HRM wants to remind residents that Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act requires that people remove their vehicles from the streets, day or night, in the event of a snow or ice event. Vehicles obstructing snow removal or winter maintenance operations can be removed at the owner’s cost, regardless of the time or date.
