Waste Collection Over the Holidays

Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – HRM wants to remind residents of changes to municipal garbage, organics and recyclables collection over the holidays.

Residents who would normally have had collection services on Christmas Day (Wednesday, Dec. 25) will now have waste pickup on Saturday, Dec. 28. Please ensure cans, bins and bags are clear of snow and accessible.

There will be no municipal garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on New Year’s Day (Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014). Collection services for that day will be provided on the following Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014.

Collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m. To ensure collection, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day. The HRM’s residential Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot will be closed Saturday, Dec. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, but will be open on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The following are some helpful tips for disposing of holiday decorations, wrapping and other seasonal items:

• Natural Christmas trees will be picked up on your organics collection week. Trees must be free of plastic, tinsel, ornaments, metal rings, nails, stands and plastic tree bags.
• You can also compost or mulch your holiday greenery (boughs, trees, etc.).
• Wreaths with metal wire frames or plastic cord go in a garbage bag with regular collection.
• Recycle your paper gift wrap by placing it in a grocery bag for recyclables collections. Ensure it is free of ribbons, bows and ornaments.
• Place non-paper gift wrap and foil wrap in the garbage.
• Corrugated cardboard must be tied and bundled for recycling.
• Boxboard, such as shoe and cereal boxes, can be placed in your green cart.
• Whenever possible, recycle or save gift wrap, bows, ribbons and cards for use next year.
• Give old toys and clothing to a charitable organization.
