Young women participate in career-forming summer camp

Friday, July 5, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – Two dozen young women from across HRM are about to open their eyes to a potential career as a first-responder.

Camp Courage immerses females aged 15-19 into the exciting and challenging careers of firefighting, policing, and paramedicine. The eight-day camp (July 7-14) shatters stereotypes surrounding these male-dominated careers, and shows impressionable teens that they too can excel in these professions.

The ultimate goal is for the young women to leave with a sense of empowerment and the confidence to believe they can achieve any goal, career, or dream they desire.

In the seven years since this unique camp started, more than 30 young women have embarked on careers as a first-responder – some of the women were trailblazers in their community. Many credit Camp Courage for showing them that it is a realistic goal to aim for a career as a first-responder.

The media is invited to witness (and even participate if you so choose) this one-of-a-kind camp experience first-hand throughout the week, as the young women tackle everything from firefighting, to crime-scene investigations, and what to do in a medical emergency.
