Notice of blasting operations at Nova Centre site

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – As part of the site excavation activity for the Nova Centre located on the two blocks bordered by Market Street, Prince Street, Argyle Street and Sackville Street in downtown Halifax, the contractor, Dexter Construction, has obtained a permit to carry out the blasting operations. Blasting operations will begin tomorrow, January 16, with one to two blasts per day for approximately seven months until excavation is complete. There will be momentary traffic interruptions for each blast but they should last no longer than three to five minutes.

All requirements outlined in Blasting By-law B-600 have been met in order to have a permit issued for this project. Pre-blast inspections on structures within a pre-blast radius, as outlined in the by-law, have been carried out, and residents and business and property owners within a 300-metre radius of the construction site have been given notification of the operation by the contractor. Seismographs will be set up on structures in the area to monitor vibration and sound levels to ensure they do not exceed allowable limits.

Operations can take place Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No blasting will take place on weekends or statutory holidays.
