Halifax celebrates Canada’s ‘Garden Day’ with design competition
Thursday, June 13, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Public Gardens is the place to be on Friday morning at 10 a.m., as local celebrities get their hands dirty in a unique, not-so garden-variety design competition.
Gardens in communities across the country will be in the spotlight during the inaugural ‘Canada’s Garden Day’ on June 14, 2013 – to be held annually on the Friday before Father’s Day.
Canada’s Garden Day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of public and private gardens, the value of home gardening, the benefits of green spaces, and the promotion of environmental stewardship.
The Halifax Public Gardens is one of the oldest formal Victorian gardens in North America and it will kick off the national event by playing host to a friendly competition on Friday morning just inside the middle entrance to the Public Gardens on Spring Garden Road.
Four celebrity want-to-be green-thumbs will roll up their sleeves and dig into the dirt to design their very own Victorian planter. Our best friend and TV celebrity floral designer, Neville of My Mother’s Bloomers fame, will be there to provide a running commentary.
The four planters will remain in the Gardens for all to see. There will also be online voting to decide which celebrity’s creation deserves top prize. To cast a vote, go to Halifax.ca/publicgardens
Come on out to support the Public Gardens, and gardening as we mark the first-ever ‘Canada’s Garden Day.
