Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency moves ahead with substation decommissioning

Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – HRM citizens are invited to a series of information sessions across the region to learn more about the pending decommissioning of five Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) substations.

Substations are satellite fire halls that feed into hub stations across HRM.

Fire Chief Doug Trussler announced in the spring during budget deliberations that five substations (Elderbank, Mooseland, Upper Hammonds Plains, Terence Bay, and Ketch Harbour) would be decommissioned this year.

These particular substations have been identified as being understaffed (not enough volunteers) and underutilized (not enough calls to warrant staying open). The buildings have been deemed surplus to HRFE’s needs, but the high level of service citizens in these areas have come to expect from the fire service will remain unchanged.

Residents will continue to receive the same standard of service tomorrow as they’re receiving today.

The format for these public sessions is informal. Citizens can drop in at any point throughout the evening to have their questions answered. Fire Chief Doug Trussler will be joined at these information sessions by high-ranking members of his fire service, as well as by HRM staff knowledgeable in the handling of surplus municipal properties.

All the meetings will be held from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. at the following locations:

• Mooseland Fire Hall (4032 Mooseland Rd.) – Tuesday Nov. 19
• Upper Hammonds Plains Fire Hall (948 Pockwock Rd.) – Thursday Nov. 21
• Terence Bay Fire Hall (80 Sandy Cove Rd.) – Monday Nov. 25
• Ketch Harbour Fire Hall (964 Ketch Harbour Rd.) – Tuesday Nov. 26
• Elderbank substation meeting will be at the Meaghers Grant fire hall (4413 Hwy 357) – Wednesday Nov. 27
