36th Annual Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition

Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Have you got a knack with sand? An active imagination? Maybe you prefer to appreciate the fine art of sandcastle building from the sidelines rather than getting your hands dirty?

No matter what you like, all are welcome at the 36th annual Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition this Sunday, Aug. 24.

For the past 35 years, this great family event has attracted hundreds of contestants and thousands of spectators to the beautiful white sand of Clam Harbour Beach on the Eastern Shore. The park gates open at 9 a.m. and the event will go on, rain or shine.

Spectators can check out the Family Fun Zone at the interpretation centre, where there will be crafts, face painting and entertainment. Then take a stroll along the beach to check out the impressive creations and listen to the live acoustic musicians performing along the coastline.

There will be food vendors on site in the parking lot and merchandise for sale at the registration tent on the beach, including terry cloth beach towels imprinted with the sandcastle competition logo.

For the competitors, there’s a new twist this year. Organizers will bury five plastic starfish in the sand the night before the competition. Those who dig one up while building their sand creations will win a prize!

As always, there will also be prizes for the best sandcastle and best sand sculpture. This year competitors will be judged on the artistry, structure and spirit of their creation. Among the judges will be area Councillor David Hendsbee (Preston-Chezzetcook-Eastern Shore).

There will be some parking restrictions in place on Clam Harbour Road and Beach Road from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Parking will be permitted only on the right-hand side of the road (travelling towards the beach). Anyone parked on the left-hand side of the road (travelling towards the beach) will be ticketed and/or towed.
