Annual Fall Leaf Clean-Up Program

Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is encouraging residents to do their part to help keep the streets and sidewalks clear of fallen leaves as the annual Fall Leaf Clean-Up Program gets underway later this month.

Over the next two weeks street cleaners will be out clearing the roadways of fallen leaves and other debris. After that, crews will begin collecting and removing the leaves from municipal streets in the heavily treed areas of the former City of Halifax first, and as required in other areas of the urban core boundary of the Halifax region. This service will happen only once on a street-by-street basis.

The co-operation of residents and business owners is needed to efficiently complete this program. As we saw with the heavy rain this past weekend, the potential for street flooding is greatly increased when catch basins are clogged with leaves and debris. As such, municipal by-laws prohibit the sweeping or depositing of leaves along the gutter of the street or in the roadway.

Leaves and yard waste from residential properties are collected on regular green cart collection weeks. Each household can place a maximum of 20 bags filled with leaves at the curb on their respective collection days. Each bag should weigh no more than 25 kilograms (55 pounds).

Residents are encouraged to start using kraft paper bags to dispose of their leaves and yard waste to coincide with proposed changes that are anticipated to go into effect next spring. However, for those who may still have plastic bags on hand, clear and orange plastic bags will continue to be accepted at the curb at this time.
