Fairview Residents Encouraged to Sign Up for RainYards Project

Friday, May 30, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Residents living in the Fairview area are invited to help kick off the Clean Foundation’s RainYards program on Saturday, May 31, and learn more about how to manage stormwater run-off.

Stormwater – or water run-off from heavy rainstorms – can spread pollutants from the city into the natural environment and watershed. It can also lead to costly flooding problems.

This new program helps homeowners adapt their property to reduce flooding and stormwater issues. The first 100 eligible residents to sign up at tomorrow’s event will get a complimentary home stormwater assessment and are invited to paint their very own free rain barrel. Rain barrels will be delivered during the home assessments.

Residents can go online at www.clean.ns.ca/rainyards to see if they are eligible, depending on where they live.

Tomorrow’s event is being held from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Fairview United Church Hall, 3524 Dutch Village Rd.

The RainYards program is funded in part by the Halifax Regional Municipality. Regional Council approved $50,000 over two years for the initiative from the Sustainable Community reserve fund.

For more information or to register for the program, residents can contact the Clean Foundation at 902-497-4823, by email at rainyards@clean.ns.ca or go online at www.clean.ns.ca/rainyards.
