Street Closures for Final Stage of Roundabout Construction

Monday, Oct. 20, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Construction crews are moving into the final stage of work this week on the new roundabout at the intersection of North Park, Cunard and Agricola streets in Halifax.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, crews will begin the process of reopening the east end of Cunard Street and the outbound lane on Agricola Street. The inbound lane of Agricola will remain shut down between Woodill and Cunard streets until the roundabout is operational.

At about 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, crews will close the west end of Cunard Street, between Robie and North Park streets. This stretch will also remain closed until the roundabout is operational.

There will be signage posted in the neighbourhood and traffic personnel will be on site to assist with access for local traffic. To help reduce problems, motorists are urged to plan ahead now to find alternative routes while this work continues.

For pedestrians, there will be intermittent sidewalk closures in the area; however, the sidewalk on the west side of North Park Street, in front of the Halifax Armoury, will remain open throughout this final stage of work.

Pedestrians and cyclists are also advised that rolling closures will continue for the next few weeks while crews proceed with work on the active transportation trail on the Halifax Common, near North Park and Cunard. Pedestrians are asked to watch for posted signage indicating when the trail is closed, as dates, times and specific locations will depend on the progress of the work.

The North Park Street area remains an active construction site, so motorists are reminded to heed posted speed limits and other construction zone signage, and to keep an eye out for construction workers. Pedestrians and cyclists should use caution when travelling through the area and are encouraged to use alternative routes during this work.

The municipality appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation, and apologizes for any inconvenience these closures and the ongoing construction may cause.

This is a two-year project, beginning with construction of the roundabout at Cunard Street, which is expected to open the first week of November. The second roundabout at the intersection of North Park, Cogswell, Rainnie, Trollope and Ahern streets will be built in 2015.
