HRM Invites Residents to Learn More about Next Stage of North Park Intersection Redesign Project
Thursday, March 13, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is encouraging residents to attend an upcoming public information session to learn more about how the North Park Intersection Redesign project is developing.
Last month, HRM hosted one of two public engagement sessions on the project, which includes the construction of roundabouts at the intersections of North Park, Agricola and Cunard streets, and North Park, Cogswell, Rainnie, Trollope and Ahern streets. Both intersections need to be upgraded, as they do not meet national transportation standards.
At the meeting on Feb. 6, HRM unveiled the first round of design drawings (50%) and gathered feedback on opportunities for active transportation, outdoor art and new public spaces.
Staff members have carefully reviewed the input and are now ready to unveil the next round of design drawings (90%). They will also use the opportunity to answer questions from residents and commuters about the impact construction will have on the area, if Regional Council approves the project as part of the 2014/15 budget.
The information session will run from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at the Atlantica Hotel Halifax, Guild Hall, 1980 Robie St. Residents are encouraged to drop in at their convenience. Staff members will be on hand to share information on the project and to talk about the new design drawings, which include some creative ideas on how to incorporate outdoor art on the adjacent Halifax Common parkland.
For those who are unable to attend in person, the design drawings will be posted online next week.
In addition to the information session, HRM has already reached out directly to residents who live in the neighbourhood, and will also meet with stakeholders who will be affected during construction, such as Parks Canada in regards to access to Citadel Hill.
If the project is approved, the project will then go to tender. Construction of the first roundabout at the Cunard Street intersection is expected to begin in early June and run until the fall. Construction of the second roundabout at the Cogswell Street intersection would take place during roughly the same period in 2015.
