HRM Urging Motorists to Drive with Care Tonight
Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is urging motorists to slow down and drive carefully during their afternoon commute, as most streets are snow-covered and slick.
The snow is still falling in many areas of HRM and Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Halifax region. Weather forecasts are calling for snow to end early this evening with a 40 per cent chance of flurries and blowing snow overnight.
Municipal Operations crews have been out all day and continue to work to clear the streets and sidewalks of snow and ice from today’s storm. Crews have been able to maintain the three-hour turnaround time on Priority 1 routes and have started to do centerline cuts on Priority 2 routes.
Some Metro Transit buses are currently operating on snow plans. Updates on individual bus routes and any impacts on service will be available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at www.halifax.ca/metrotransit.
Motorists and pedestrians should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time in reaching their evening destinations, to avoid rushing on the slippery streets.
Residents are also reminded that the winter parking ban will be enforced overnight from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. Residents should secure off-street parking during those hours.
Municipal Operations crews will continue to monitor weather forecasts and conditions this afternoon and into tonight, and will dispatch additional resources as required.
