Overnight parking ban will be enforced 1-6 a.m. Thursday, March 27

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the overnight winter parking ban will be enforced overnight, from 1-6 a.m. Thursday, March 27, while municipal operations works to clear the streets and sidewalks of the snow and ice from today’s storm.

Vehicles must be off HRM streets during these hours to accommodate effective clearing operations. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.

The overnight winter parking ban is in effect until March 31, however, it will only be enforced during declared snow and ice operations.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications of parking bans. Fill out a registration form at www.halifax.ca/snow/parkingban, email contacthrm@halifax.ca or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Snow has already begun falling in some areas of HRM and is expected to continue throughout the day. Forecasts are calling for an accumulation of up to 35 centimetres, with extremely high winds, blowing snow and whiteout conditions.

Municipal crews and contracted services were busy overnight with pre-salting and anti-icing measures to help reduce the buildup of snow and ice on the streets and sidewalks. Clearing crews will continue working throughout the day today and overnight, ramping up equipment as required.
