Overnight parking ban will be enforced 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the overnight winter parking ban will be enforced overnight, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, while Municipal Operations works to clear the streets and sidewalks of the snow and ice expected later tonight.

Vehicles must be off HRM streets during these hours to accommodate effective clearing operations. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.

The overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31, however, it will only be enforced during declared snow and ice operations.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications. Fill out a registration form at www.halifax.ca/snow/parkingban, email contacthrm@halifax.ca or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Most areas of HRM saw approximately five centimetres of snowfall overnight last night, and another 10 centimetres of snow is expected late this evening. There is a risk of freezing rain in some areas and rain is also in the mix along parts of the coast.

Municipal crews and contracted services are out today, continuing to clear, salt and sand the roads and sidewalks as needed as a result of last night’s weather and to prepare for tonight.
