Overnight parking ban will be enforced 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6

Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the winter parking ban will be enforced overnight, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, while Municipal Operations works to clear the streets and sidewalks of the snow from today’s storm.

Vehicles must be off HRM streets during these hours to accommodate effective clearing operations. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.

The overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31, however, it will only be enforced during declared snow and ice operations.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications of parking bans. Fill out a registration form at www.halifax.ca/snow/parkingban, email contacthrm@halifax.ca or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Weather forecasts are calling for a nor’easter to hit the Halifax region at about noon today, bringing as much as 20 centimetres of heavy, blowing snow mixed with ice pellets.

Municipal crews and contracted services are already out pre-salting and applying brine to the streets and will continue until the snow starts falling. Driving conditions are expected to deteriorate through the afternoon hours. Motorists are advised to slow down accordingly and expect a slower than usual evening commute.
