Residents Invited to Participate in Planning Process for Port Wallace Lands

Friday, May 30, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Residents are invited to attend an information meeting on Thursday, June 5, regarding the planning process for the potential development of approximately 400 hectares of land in the community of Port Wallace.

The lands in question are along the east side of Lake Charles and were identified in the Regional Plan as a potential future growth area to be serviced with municipal sewer and water services.

In 2010, Regional Council initiated background studies and a community (secondary) planning process in Port Wallace. While Regional Council ultimately makes the final decision on any changes to the land use policies and regulations, there are currently a number of opportunities for residents to be involved in the planning process.

The information meeting will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Port Wallis United Church, 263 Waverley Rd., Dartmouth. Municipal staff will be on hand to answer questions about the planning process.

Residents, business owners and members of volunteer organizations in Port Wallace can also apply to serve on the Port Wallace Public Participation Committee. The deadline to apply is June 20. To apply, contact the Municipal Clerk’s Office at 490-4210 or visit www.halifax.ca/boardscom.

Applicants cannot have a direct financial interest in the outcome of the process or provide consulting services to any party with such an interest. Appointments shall be made in accordance with the Halifax Regional Municipality’s Public Appointments Policy and Regional Council Public Participation Resolution. Knowledge of planning issues may be beneficial.

Finally, residents can attend the Port Wallace Community Planning Workshop on Wednesday, June 11. WSP consultants will present initial findings of a Land Suitability Analysis and gather community input on the significant environmental, cultural and heritage features in the area.

That workshop will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the Stevens Road United Baptist Church, 2 Stevens Rd., Dartmouth.
