Winning Name for New Ferry Announced

Monday, January 13, 2014 – Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Metro Transit are pleased to announce that residents of HRM have voted for the name Christopher Stannix for the new HRM harbour ferry to increase service on the Woodside/Halifax route. The name is awaiting approval from Transport Canada to be proudly displayed on the new ferry when it comes into service in the spring of 2014.

Master Corporal Stannix was a graduate of Auburn Drive High School and attended Saint Mary’s University. In 2001 he enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces. In April 2007, he was killed when the vehicle he was in struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. He was 24 years old.

Over 12,800 votes were cast online for the naming of the new HRM Ferry. HRM and Metro Transit would like to thank all of those who took part by sending in submissions and voting. A name for the new ferry is required to be chosen for vessel registration purposes and to ensure that the name can be emblazoned on the side of the ship before going into service.

The ferry naming contest followed a process, as agreed to by Regional Council.

The person who submitted the winning name receives a conventional Metro Transit pass for a period of one year. A number of residents wanted to honour Master Corporal Stannix by naming the new ferry after him. The submissions were time stamped to determine who sent in the winning entry first.
