Public Art at the Metro Transit Bridge Terminal
Tuesday, March 4, 2014 – Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) if pleased to announce that Halifax-based artist, Sara Hartland Rowe, is currently working on a public art piece for the Metro Transit Bridge Terminal. The artwork is commissioned through HRM’s public art program which provides art in new, municipal facilities with the intent of enhancing the public experience of those spaces.
A lifelong transit user herself, Ms. Hartland Rowe is committed to creating artwork that adds to the user experience of the Metro Transit system. Ms. Hartland Rowe’s art will involve a large-scale, wall-mounted installation of enamel-painted sheet metal. The subject matter of the work is based on drawings she has done onsite at the terminal and while travelling by bus throughout HRM. The installation will reinforce the sense of movement of buses and people through the terminal space and will form a bold, energetic and playful counterpoint to the architecture of the terminal. The installation will run the length of the large retaining wall below the terminal pedestrian bridge. Ms. Hartland Rowe is currently finishing the detailed design and expects to be fabricating pieces in the early spring with an installation timeline of mid-May.
Ms. Hartland Rowe has exhibited her work throughout Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, and Argentina and has produced large-scale wall paintings for the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Gallery of Windsor (ON), Museum London (ON), the Durham Art Gallery (ON), the Koffler Gallery (ON) and Harbourfront Gallery (ON). Since 2001 she has been an instructor in the painting department at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
