A statement from Halifax Mayor Mike Savage on the passing of Walter Fitzgerald

(Saturday, October 11, 2014) - We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Walter Fitzgerald. He was a remarkable man who has left an indelible imprint on our Municipality and our Province. Few people have been as involved in the life of our city as Walter.

As a Mayor of Halifax, both before and after municipal amalgamation, and as an MLA and Cabinet Minister, he was an effective voice, and a comforting presence. He was truly a man of the people.

Walter believed deeply in his city and his province. He leaves behind a legacy of community service and improving the lives of citizens. A champion for Halifax with his trademark affable style, Walter left only friends and a better community behind.

On a personal note, I first met Walter when he was between political lives and working as a teacher and a voice of his community. I met him at his school where his commitment to kids and his encouragement of them was heartwarming. When I was considering running for Mayor I was privileged to visit Walter at his home and spent a number of hours with him talking about government and politics. It was a meaningful conversation that will stay with me.

On behalf of all citizens of our municipality and on behalf of everyone at City Hall, I offer my best wishes and sympathy to the family.

Walter Fitzgerald will be remembered and honoured.
