New meeting location and time - Proposal for organics wastewater treatment

Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of a location and time change for the upcoming public information session being held on Monday, Sept. 22, to discuss proposed operational changes at the former Sackville Landfill Leachate Treatment Plant.

Monday, Sept. 22, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Hammonds Plains Consolidated Elementary School, Cafeteria
2180 Hammonds Plains Road, Hammonds Plains

The proposal is to treat organics wastewater from Halifax’s two compost facilities at the Sackville Landfill Leachate Treatment Plant, which is operating well under capacity. Current practice is for organics wastewater from the municipality’s two compost facilities (Burnside and Goodwood) to be collected and transported out of province for treatment.

Environmental and fiscal sustainability is central to the proposal. The change in operations would continue to ensure the water quality of outflow from the facility remains within guidelines set by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) and adheres to provincial requirements, as well as generate savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Please note that the old landfill site in Sackville is not being reopened.

All Halifax residents are invited to attend. For more information on this proposal, visit www.halifax.ca/recycle/leachate.php.
