Evacuation underway at natural gas leak on Gaston Road

Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency crews are currently on scene at a natural gas leak on Gaston Road, near Portland Street in Dartmouth.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., fire crews responded to a call reporting a six-inch natural gas main breach along Gaston Road. Efforts are currently underway to contain the leak.

Homes along Gaston Road, and connecting side streets, are being evacuated as a precaution.

In total, 550 properties are being evacuated, including residences, businesses, and a daycare in the area.

Also, students at Prince Arthur Junior High and Southdale-North Woodside School are remaining in their buildings until the leak is contained.

The evacuation perimeter may need to be expanded, depending on the weather. Fire officials are monitoring the area for the concentration of gas.

Natural gas contractors are on site and will clamp the line to stop the leak, and then remove and replace the punctured pipe.

Metro Transit buses are providing shelter to those who have been evacuated from their homes, and Halifax Regional Police personnel are also on scene assisting with traffic control.

Motorists are advised that Portland Street is closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic in both directions between Joffre Street and Lakefront Road.
