New open art projects to be unveiled this week

Monday, Sept. 22, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is pleased to support two new art exhibitions that are opening this week for public viewing.

“Prodcution” is a temporary art exhibit created by Ryan Witt and Bronwynne Conrad-Martin, which is an installation based project that uses the language of bingo. This exhibit will be open as follows:

Farrell Hall (276 Windmill Road) – 2nd floor
Wednesday, Sept. 24 to Friday, Sept. 26, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 27, 8 a.m. -11 a.m.

“Body of Water” is a multimedia experience inviting you to feel the glory of lake swimming in Halifax. Join the artists as they launch the site www.bodyofwater.ca with an unusual screening choreographed by Jacinte Armstrong.

The Khyber Centre for the Arts (5521 Cornwallis Street) – Courtyard
Saturday, Sept. 27, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. (screenings every 20 minutes)

“Body of Water” is a production of part & parcel (Veronica Simmonds and Katie McKay), with the close collaboration of: illustrator Rebecca Roher; composer Alex Melnyk; and web designer Lukas Steinman. As well as the bodies and voices of: Kira Daube, Jude Williams, Annie Macmillan, Casey Schwarz, Nick Dourado, Eva Mooers and Rosalyn Iuliucci.

Both projects were supported through the municipal Open Projects Program. The program began in 2009 as a means of inviting artists and creative professionals to submit site-specific proposals with the aim of animating public spaces and encouraging civic engagement through the arts. Artists are asked to respond to their natural and built environments by considering them as civic assets, and by exploring opportunities to enhance, animate, altar or contextualize them in ways that engage the interest and imagination of general public. Projects are peer-assessed by a committee of artists from diverse disciplines.
