After August 23, any call placed without an area code will prompt a network announcement to remind residents of the change to 10-digit local dialling and delaying the connection. Ten-digit dialling will become mandatory on Sunday, November 16, 2014 and calls placed without the area code will not be connected.
Existing three-digit numbers such as 911, 311, 811, and 411 will not be affected by the change, but residents will need to dial 10 digits for Halifax Transit Go Time information. Residents are advised to make changes on phones, security systems, and other equipment currently programed using a seven-digit telephone number.
The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, implemented by the telecommunications alliance. Please visit www.dial10.ca for more information.
