City of Halifax Civic Reports:1857-1922

Each year all departments of the City of Halifax would submit a formal report to Council. These were published annually by the Clerk's Office, as "Civic Reports" or "City Reports", essentially an Annual Report. The structure of city government changed many times and so the content of the Annual Reports also changed; however, they typically include:

Estimates; City Auditor’s Report; City Treasurer’s Report; City Clerk’s Report; City Prison Report; City Home or Poor Asylum Report; City Assessor’s Report; Water Commission Report

Library Reports; Report of the Chief of Police; Fire Department Report; Clerk of Works Report; City Engineer's Report List of Mayors (some volumes have a photograph of the mayor); List of Aldermen and Councillors (for Board of Control years); Valuation for Assessment reports

Digitized versions of the Civic Reports for 1865-1872; 1879-1918; 1919-1920 are presented here. The Archives has earlier Civic Reports back to 1857 which will be digitized in the future, but can be viewed at the Archives.
