City of Halifax Council Minute Indexes, 1841-1996

Searching indexes will give more precise results than searching the scanned minutes. You have two ways of searching the indexes:

  1. Search all indexed years:
    • Go to Google.ca
    • Enter "site:http://legacycontent.halifax.ca/archives/HalifaxCityIndexes_your search term" (where _ is a space).

This will limit your search to the contents of this page. We apologize for this cumbersome temporary search mechanism, a better tool is in the works.

  2. If you know the approximate years of interest, open the relevant index below:
    • Select the years of interest to open a pdf file of the index.
    • Do a search (Find or <Ctrl><F>) for relevant keywords (use terms contemporary to that time period (eg. Gottingen St., alderman), try different spellings).

If you get results:

  1. Note the date and page number of that index entry.
  2. Go to  the Minutes list.
  3. Find the date range containing the years you noted in the index and open the relevant pdf.
  4. Search for the relevant term.

If you do not get expected search results, you may need to browse through the index looking for entries of interest. Because some of the indexes have been scanned from microfilm, the quality may be poor and thus search results will not be accurate.

1841-1890 Original Hand-written Indexes

The City Clerk's Office created handwritten indexes to the early minute-books. These are difficult to read and indexing is poor (eg. all Reports are under "R"). The searchable 1841-1890 Index provided above was transcribed by the Archives from either the original index or the headlines the Clerk put in the left-hand margin of the original minute-books. Scanned copies of the original handwritten indexes are provided below for interest.

Halifax Municipal Archives gratefully acknowledges the financial assistance of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian Council of Archives in supporting the Young Canada Works summer student program which funded the work of several students who transcribed the handwritten index entries.
