Skip to content. Accessibility info.Water quality objectives have been set for Halifax Harbour. Provision of sewage treatment has achieved these objectives. For example, national standards set 200/100mL of fecal coliform, and 35/100ml of enterococci, as the maximum safe bacteria limits for contact recreation. Enterococci is considered the best indicator for marine waters. The data show that many locations throughout the middle and inner Harbour exceeded this limit prior to treatment (red numbers), but that with sewage treatment for Halifax, Dartmouth and Herring Cove, the harbour is now suitable for swimming (blue and green numbers).
