2. | Update on HHS Project An update was given on the status of the project by Mike Kroger, Bill Corbyn and Philippe Cantareil. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act documents are in the hands of the Halifax Port Authority, awaiting their signature. It is expected that the document (contract) will be signed by them on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. Once the contract is signed contractors will be hired and work on the plant will get underway. Mr. Cantareil is responsible for the overall construction of all three STPs. After some discussion on how the Community will work with Mr. Cantareil, it was agreed that direct communication will be established between the CLC, Mr. Cantareil and Bill Corbyn. The Design Charette results will be sent to Bill Corbyn. Mr. Cantareil will be invited to meet with the CLC again. Mike Kroger, Bill Corbyn and Dan O'Halloran will attend the Design Charette. All three understand that their role will be that of observers. |
3. | Presentation by Cunard Steamship Historical Society John Langley from the society provided an historical overview of the area on and around the STP site. The Cunard family owned 1/3 of the STP land. Mr. Langley shared some of his ideas with the group. The site could connect Central Halifax to the South end via a boardwalk. The STP could become a national heritage site recognizing the significance of Samuel Cunard. It could be an interpretive centre that could be tied in with tourism and development. As an Interpretive Centre/Museum, it could become the 3 rd major waterfront site, added to Pier 21 and the Maritime Museum. The entrance arch of the Cunard Warehouse could be re-built and become a monument on the site. The CLC was interested in the picture of the Cunard Warehouse; Mr. Langley will try to get a picture to the group by Monday. |
4. | Presentation on Urban Design Project Lesley Griffith is an Environmental Planning Consultant working on the Urban Design Project. She will be organizing a community meeting to talk about Gottingen Street, with a particular focus on public space. The Project will be asking people to bring forward ideas on bikeways, pedestrian areas, benches, green space, trees etc. Also, they are interested in talking about private development, transportation, and accessibility. HRM gives out grants every year for streetscape projects. There are ideas being considered for the land around the Library. There will be a meeting sponsored by the Capital District Task Force and the Gottingen Street Merchants Association on Wednesday, February 26 th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Brunswick Street United Church in the Sanctuary. For more information, Lesley can be reached at 423-8629. The meeting will be fairly informal. There will be a slide show of the street; this is sure to spark lots of discussion. Some ideas and options will be provided as a starting place for people, and then it will be thrown open for people to talk. |
