3.

Community Development Corporation - Next Steps:

a. 2nd Focus Group Report

It was decided to postpone discussion on this item until the next CLC meeting as the group did not have the information on-hand and had not reviewed it prior to the meeting.

b. Review of Draft Proposal

It was also decided to postpone discussion on this item until the next CLC meeting as the group wanted more time to review the document.

c. Tiger Team Proposal

The group discussed the idea of the Tiger Team and felt that it was time to implement this idea as it will move the CDC proposal forward. The experts that have been identified previously and during this meeting are:

Professor David Divine

Bryan Darrell

Grant Wanzel

Ross Cantwell

Frank Palermo

Maureen MacDonald

Howard Epstein

Natasha Jackson

A member of the clergy

Jay Metcalfe

It is anticipated that this group will be contacted by Craig in the next few weeks (perhaps before the next CLC meeting) and those that wish to participate will meet outside of the CLC and discuss how to implement the CDC. They will then advise the CLC on how to proceed.

4.

Other Business

a. Inclusion of Youth in CDC Activities

During the last CHCA meeting the group spent some time discussing how to get youth involved in the CDC activities. Alvena had attended a conference that stressed the importance of getting the youth involved in community projects right from the start. A list of local people that are involved in youth programs has been drafted and it includes representatives from the local churches, schools, YMCA, George Dixon Centre, Police, Friendship Centre, etc.  Anne will draft a letter to send to this group inviting them to a focus session that will be held at the earliest on February 2nd, and the latest on February 22nd (date to be confirmed by Craig). The focus session will involve members of the CLC explaining the history of the CLC and the CDC project, and may involve the showing of one or both videos of other CDCs in Winnipeg and in New Jersey. The group will be asked to provide the names of responsible, mature young people that they know that we can approach to create a youth group that will be involved in the development and implementation of the CDC from the start. Some of the discussion that occurred included the youngest ages that would be effective to be in the youth group, and the possible separation of younger and older youth.  It was suggested that Professor David Devine be invited to this focus session. The group discussed that it might be appropriate for Craig to talk to Prof. Devine about two things: one being his participation in the Tiger Team, and the other being his participation in this focus session.

b. Milestones and Target Dates for CLC Project

The group discussed the following tentative milestones:

Input on the design of the sewage treatment plant and its surroundings:
The work left for this responsibility will likely require one (or possibly two) more meetings with HRM and the architects with assistance from George and Frank. This will likely be concluded in the next two months, so by mid-March this should be done.

CDC Project:

The next focus group session with the youth program workers in the area will occur in early February.

A meeting/focus group session with the Gottingen Street Merchants Association was discussed and Anne will look into setting it up by the end of February.

The “Tiger Team” of experts in community development will be contacted, meet at their own specified time, and hopefully report back to the CLC by mid-March.

c. Supper for Sharon Martin on January 25th at 5:00 p.m. at Club Vortex

Anne and the CHCA group have invited the members of the CLC to join them in a supper for Sharon Martin to thank her for all her assistance to both organizations. The supper will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at 5:00 pm at the Club Vortex on Gottingen Street.
